Kings Road is an RPG that has been going strong for years now and when I jumped on this product the team was attempting to do something extremely difficult. Port the Flash-based game from web to mobile phone and tablet. Due to the success of Kings Road on web, this was of course the most obvious growth strategy for the product. With a game as robust in features as any good RPG out there, most of the designers out there who work in games probably have an idea of how much work this was. Because we were targeting multiple platforms like Android/IOS/Steam and other web portals at the same time! :) What was most challenging about this endeavor was not conforming to the multitudes of form factors out there when talking about cross-platform mobile phones and tablets, it was about preserving the rich experience that players have been experiencing on web...essentially all of the flash-enabled bells and whistles which perfomed extremely well on web and desktop. What this entailed was an asset optimization effort that's analogous to arming Michaelangelo with crayons to paint the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. Effects and animations had to be re-rendered in ways we couldn't have imagined so that we could reach the minimum spec device profile we were aiming for.
Through lots of close interactions with my engineering friends on the team, we achieved the unthinkable! A fully running cross-platform Kings Road that was performing so well, we were featured on the IOS app store during Christmas for "Best Free Game" and had a strong rotation in their carousel. In the end, I provided UI/UX solutions and successfully ported Kings Road on web to mobile tablet and phone. I also supported the mobile and live web product with UX/UI/animations for new features and game systems. Bigups to my KR team over at Rumble Entertainment!!
